I recently had a conversation on the topic of luck. What is the difference between being lucky and being fortunate? I’ve been giving it some thought, and it strikes me that luck is something that occurs simply by chance and we are in the spot to receive it. Many might say winning the lotto is lucky, and I agree it is, but even in this case, in order to win the lottery, you have to buy a ticket! So you had a hand in whether you would be in line for “luck”. Can you think of any examples of pure luck?
I notice that kids often say “They are so lucky that…”. However, in most cases they are referring to someones’ fortunate-ness rather than luck. I see the definition of “fortunate” as being able to create scenarios with a chance of success, and be in the position to reap the benefits of a successful outcome. In the actual definition of fortunate, the word lucky is used to describe it–no wonder we are confused!! The definition of fortunate also includes use of the word auspicious: giving or being a sign of future success. So what are the signs of future success?
I guess my point here, is that being fortunate takes a great deal of effort, fortitude and follow-through. It implies risk and reward. it involves seeing a vision and making it a reality in whatever way possible. A “fortunate outcome” is not about luck. It is the end product of a dedicated process.
Where in your life have you been truly lucky?
In what way have you been fortunate?
What part of your life is calling for an action plan to create your own fortunate outcome?
What step can you take toward that plan right now?
Go on out there and create fortune, and stretch beyond the constricted images of luck!!
