Holding Heavy Things Lightly

November 12, 2025 by Leah Halvorsen

Maybe the world feels heavy right now. Maybe it is.

Maybe YOUR world feels heavy right now. Maybe it is.

While the truth may be that you are carrying heavy things inside you, or from the world around you, what do you do? How do you breathe when it feels like an elephant is sitting on your chest or on top of your head?

It can be easy to get discouraged or downright exhausted, so I’ll share with you some soundbites from my soul to yours. May you find some traction or some peace that gives space to hold heavy things lightly. Even a moment of lightness can help you take a deep breath and give you a wee rest that allows you to keep taking steps toward this next thing (or away from a thing).

-Slow steps still get you there.

-If it is too much for today, put it down and try again tomorrow.

-Ask for help or companionship. Sometimes just BEING with another human makes heavy things lighter.

-Tea, warm bath, quiet music in the dark, early to bed.

-Is sleep hard when things are heavy? What brings comfort and solace? Favourite blanket? Stuffed animal? (1/3 adults sleep with one 😉

-Faith. Heavy things get lighter when we remember that we are more than our human experience, and that we are NOT alone. How can you connect to that?

-Remember to eat. Maybe you forget to eat when things are heavy. Things get lighter when our body has fuel to function.

-Go outside. Even a few moments of breathing fresh air, looking at the sky and/or putting your bare feet on grass helps calm your nervous system.

-Have a good cry. Yes, that helps.

-Have a good laugh. Yes, that helps too.

-Get a hug. Not a short one. A long one.

And if things are feeling too heavy, it’s ok. Whatever you do, don’t hold the heaviness inside yourself. find 5 seconds of bravery and say “I’m not ok, and I don’t know what I need”, that can be the start of making heavy things lighter.

You are succulent. Even if you don’t know it yet.
