Every color has an energy and mood. What feelings come to you when you think of the color black? Terror, Danger, Conflict, Lost, Hopeless, Ominous, Death?
Today, my son was working on a science experiment about color. With the use of water, he was breaking complex colors down into their base colors. While experimenting, he said “Black is beautiful.” When I asked what was beautiful about black, he said, “when black breaks down, it contains all the colors. It has everything in it”–out of the mouths of babes!!
We spend a lot of time in life, steering ourselves away from our Black–our dark feelings and topics that may seem ominous or terrifying. Black is a complex color, and when it is broken down to it’s bases, it may contain some of each. Black is a complex FEELING, and when it is broken down to its bases, it may contain some of each.
Under your Black feelings, there could be Orange (possibility, adventurous), Yellow (delight, playful), Green (uncomplicated, grounded), Red (anger, sexuality), Beige (bored, tolerating), Maroon (worry, hiding), White (sacred, clean), Grey (suffocated, depressed), Blue (vulnerable, sad, significant), Brown (stuck, withholding), or Purple (dignity, respect).
Many emotional combinations exist for the creation of Black feelings. Don’t fear your Black—sit with it and see what is under it. Let the beauty and the reasons reveal themselves.
