I have been watching the debates up here in Canada (it all started with the DNC in September), and it is a mystical intriguing process to watch. Here’s what I think both candidates know: their country has a hell of a long way to go before the people in it will be able to breathe with ease. There is still impact debris all over the country from the downward spiral.
It’s like when a couple is working hard to recover their relationship: in the middle of recovery is often a terrible time to evaluate, because its just as messy as it ever was, as the new scaffolding is being built amid the old known structures. There’s shoring up, and full-on demolition existing alongside the planning crew for a new reality. Construction materials are everywhere, everyone has an opinion and let’s not forget, the actual human experience of it SUCKS, so everyone is eager to find the fastest way out (and true recovery does not have a fastest way out).
It feels to me that the voting process in the USA has gotten a lot more personal this time around. Maybe it’s less about party alliances and multigenerational voting traditions, and more about which hand can be trusted to try their damnedest to find the new reality for the country (relationship) in crisis. Sometimes the beginning phases cannot be measured by anything but the heart and our true human knowing, hope and experience.
Many Canadians have been asking “why are we so interested in what is happening down there, it ain’t us”. I can tell you why I am interested: I have fierce hope and expectancy for a recovery in the USA. I hold a great deal of empathy for what the human experience of both the destruction and reconstruction have asked and taken from the American people. I know that if love, hope and resiliency were money, then the United States would be brimming with financial sufficiency.
When its your neighborhood (relationship etc) that is still under significant life-saving renovations, its sometimes unwelcome to hear from “outsiders”, but as friends look on and support us from the outside in the struggles of our lives, I as a Canadian citizen, am doing that for you all, as you decide which hand to hold, where to place your trust, and how to continue on through the chaos that still exists. “The only way out is through”– keep going USA, Keep going…
